Michael W. Dean is an artistically schizophrenic Gemini (with moon in Scorpio) living in San Francisco. In addition to being a prolific writer, he also oil paints, and is involved in multimedia creation and web design.
As the singer in Warner/Reprise recording artists Bomb, Michael Dean made hard acid-rock albums and toured extensively in the US, Europe and Canada. Bomb, together intermittently from 1986-present, was considered an influence by bands such as Nirvana, Janes Addiction and Soundgarden. Bomb has an album of new material, Lovesucker, due in stores on Valentines Day, 1999. Dean is also the leader of an industrial side-project called Lapin Mort. Theyve been a big hit on the controversial Internet music site, mp3.com. Quicktime videos of him performing and song audio samples as well as paintings and excerpts from his fiction are available on his popular homepage www.kittyfeet.com
Dean says his goal is to Create sweet-sinister beauty, produce jobs for my very creative friends, and make a plumber's wage at art.
Michael Dean has lived on dirt floors in abandoned buildings, and has worked in executive support positions in some of the largest corporations in the world. He has written three novels and is currently at work on a non-fiction title about the craft and future of written communication.
He has perused an active interest in computers since 1976, and is experimenting daily with ways to incorporate the written word with his other loves: music, photography, hypertextural connectivity, video production, fontgraphy and his hobby of oil painting.
Educated at and then kicked out of a religious boarding school, he went to college to major in English at 16. After graduation, he turned down scholarship opportunities to go live on the street in Washington DC. He now resides on San Franciscos swanky Nob Hill and works as an executive assistant during the week and as a ditch-digger on the weekends.
Dean returned to continuing his education for two years in 1994. He maintained a 4.0 average at San Francisco City College and was awarded the John Huebner English scholarship. He was also invited to guest lecture on Internet technologies and their place in commerce and art.
Michael says of his craft, I have heard that all human endeavor is based on either fear or love. I have been working to hone my art into a sharp, pretty, poisoned dart of love pointed directly at the soul of the consumer.
Dean is a regular columnist for several on-line literary and web-design journals and has also had cameo appearances in the film Demolition Man, and in videos by the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
He has recorded in the US and Germany and released ten critically acclaimed
albums on almost as many labels. Bomb producer Bill Laswell, says, Man,
that cat can write and sing. Deans musical and literary fans include
members of Dead Kennedys, Faith No More, Boys Against Girls; and underground
photographer, auteur and Lower East Side cultural icon, Richard Kern.
Kudos to Dean:
Its gotta be done, what youre doing.
Michael Dean isnt an easy man to figure out. . . .dangerously
sexually pathological words.
Dean opens the doors to tripping madness which remind us that pretty
posters and patchouli do not psychedelia make.
Michael Dean lives in the netherworld of teenage acid-angst, taking
on life's strange mysteries like a Ray Milland crisis.
Much of what Michael Dean & co. are about cannot be captured
on tape. Bomb's attitude in performance--always bordering on chaos--is
too important to the effect. Despite having always been wowed by Bomb's
live shows, I was surprised when they were signed by a major label. I always
thought they weren't safe enough to be marketable
